NUPSAW condemns the unlawful and barbaric act of violence by police officers towards our members at Transpharm Pty Ltd

National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) is deeply disturbed and condemns the unlawful act of violence by the police officers towards our members at Transpharm, Centurion depot. The members who are employees of Transpharm, were on a protected strike yesterday morning when they were shot at by the police officers using rubber bullets.

NUPSAW deems the whole act as barbaric and an attempt to intimidate workers who were protesting lawfully for unjust working conditions they were subjected to at Transpharm. About five (5) members were injured and taken to the nearby hospital for medical attention. The employer claims that the workers violated picketing rules, hence the brutal attack on them by the police.

This union understands and is aware of the procedures to be taken before undertaking a protest or march and this particular one was not an exception. All the procedures were followed and adhered to, also ensuring that the employer is informed and agrees before the protest. It is therefore appalling that the very same officers who are supposed to serve and protect, responded with violence when workers were only fighting for their rights.

We call on these law officials to refrain from subjecting the workers to excessive force and intimidation, thus taking away their right to security and protection. Furthermore, we urge the relevant authorities to look into this matter and act accordingly, ensuring those responsible for the violence be held accountable.  Should this brutality not stop, we will not have a choice but to report the responsible officers to IPID.

The workers were protesting against unbearable working conditions after relocation of their operational services recently from Tshwane to Centurion and Isando and in demand for a fair, just and economical reasonable transport allowance or alternatively, that employer should provide transport for all workers.

The strike will continue until labour demands are met.
