Invite: Protected strike at the Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP)

The National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) would like to invite the media to cover a strike of its members at the Oderstepoort Biological Products, on Friday 31 August 2018, at its Laboratory, Onderstepoort.
This strike is a result of unresolved salary negotiations between Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) and NUPSAW. Initially, NUPSAW demanded a 9% across the board increase, a de-linking of performance, implementation of market salary survey and Housing parity of R600 while the employer offered a CPI plus performance base increase.
NUPSAW’s final demand is 6% as a base, those who got rating of 2 get 6%, those who got 3 get 6% plus 1.25% which is 7.25% and those who got 4-5 get 6% plus 1.5% which will be 7.5% increase, in addition, the employer to implement section 198, do salary market survey and parity of R600.00 for housing allowance. Salary market survey to be done before the next round of salary negotiations, that is by March 2019.
The matter remained unresolved even after it was referred to the CCMA on 1 6 August 2018. The CCMA issued a certificate giving the union the right to strike. NUPSAW gave the employer the notice to strike on the 28th August 2018, after the majority of members voted in favour of a strike in a meeting held on the same day, which said to start on Friday the 31st of August 2018 at 08h00.
